Publishing The white plains watch community newspaper
The White Plains Watch, published from 1997 to 2005, was a National Newspaper Association General Excellence Award Winner. Our mission was to stimulate a revisioning among residents of our diverse, suburban city.
The Watch was more than a newspaper. It was a gathering place where the community was encouraged to talk about the issues that most mattered—open government, public finance, open space preservation, urban redevelopment, and the integrity of the city's public school system.
The Watch not only encouraged the community to support place-based businesses but to understand why that support was vital to a healthy local economy and community. The paper conceived and collaborated on projects like "Downtown Rediscovery Day" (with the Business Improvement District), "One City, One Book" (with the public library and other local not-for-profits), "Downtown Walking Tours" (with the historical society) and the "Latino Watch" (a bilingual insert reaching out to the city's growing Spanish-speaking community.)
The paper introduced an innovative voluntary subscription program and was among the earliest community newspapers to create a robust website presence.
Unsolicited Watch Testimonials...
"The Watch has turned our lives in the right direction, opened our eyes, stimulated our minds to question, ponder, form or reform opinions, moved some of us to action and validated the importance of becoming more informed and involved in our wonderful community."
"I cannot imagine life without the Watch."
"How did we ever know the truth without your wonderful paper!"
